Peasant is the work of Damien DeRose, an American songwriter, singer, and producer, born on September 23, 1985. Starting off in 2003 at the age of 18 as a DIY specialist,[magazine 1] his first album, “Fear Not, Distant Lover”, was entirely home-recorded and self-released. With Fear Not Distant Lover and his second album, On The Ground. DeRose sings of the hopes and fears associated with life and love like a more optimistic version of Elliott Smith.[1] From 2008 on, Peasant began touring Europe and the USA, sharing the stage with Cursive, Dr. Dog, Horse Feathers, Dan Mangan, Delta Spirit, Rocky Votolato, Sharon Van Etten, Chris Pureka and others.

In late 2011 Peasant teamed up with the London, UK based Schnitzel Records Ltd.. In 2012 DeRose plans to release his new album, "Bound For Glory" in the US, Canada and Europe.[2] Schnitzel Records Ltd. is an London-based independent record label set up by Oliver Geywitz in 2003. The label has worldwide distribution and is mainly orientated towards Indie rock music. Schnitzel Records first signed with the German band Ragazzi in 2003, a mix of pop and electronic rock influences. The label also releases music in Europe and Japan by Ween and the Moistboyz. Their latest project is the release of Dean Fertita's (Queens Of The Stone Age, The Dead Weather) solo album under the name of Hello=Fire. [3]
History Damien Nicholas DeRose grew up in Doylestown, Pennsylvania, a small town where he began writing and recording in his bedroom in High School. Before he began to take his music seriously, Damien and a good friend dropped out of High School to buy a sailboat in California. When they arrived at the boat, they were told it had been sunk by Sea Lions earlier that year and was in quite bad shape. The boys returned home and after a hurtful breakup with a long time girlfriend, and a traumatizing falling out, the boat was resold and Damien began focusing on Peasant.[4] He first toured the greater part of the U.S. in 2005, a year after the boat, alone with just a guitar. The following year he released his first recordings and toured the UK, France, and the Netherlands. Upon returning home, Peasant toured the U.S. a second time, and ended in Canada for Montreal’s 2006 Popfest. Soon after the Popfest he signed his first record deal with Paper Garden Records and began recording On The Ground. Peasant toured and promoted On The Ground until 2010 when he released Shady Retreat. Soon after the release of Shady Retreat Peasant and Paper Garden Records ended their nearly 5 year long relationship as Peasant signed with Schnitzel Records to release Bound for Glory in 2012.
His second album, On the Ground, was released in 2008 on Paper Garden Records.[5] The album was distributed through Conor Oberst’s label, Team Love, and is now available in stores nation wide. In addition to being featured in Bones, two songs from On The Ground, “Fine is Fine” and “Those Days,” were featured on ABC’s Kyle XY and “Fine is Fine” was featured on Showtime’s The United States of Tara. In 2010, Peasant released his 3rd album, “Shady Retreat”, which was entirely recorded on his own. Since then he has continued to tour, taking a break in late 2011 to record and prepare a full band for his newest upcoming release, Bound For Glory.
Peasant recorded a Daytrotter Session in 2009.
In 2009 Peasant was featured on NPR's All Songs Considered blog "Second Stage".[1]
